- The Larger Hope by Russell E. Miller, UUA 1979 +: This is the
standard work on Universalist history (in 2 volumes). Vol. I is for
1770-1870 and Vol. II for 1870-1970. In spite of its huge size,
much important has been omitted and much trivial has been included.
The "why" question is often ignored.
- The Decline of Universalism 1900-1950 in "Annual Journal of the
Universalist Historical Society" vol. 6, 1966 (last issue ever). At
Univ. of CA at Santa Barbara BX9903 U524.
- The Universalist Movement in America by Ann Lee Bressler,
Oxford University Press, 2001. Covers 1770-1880 and discusses
alleged theological reasons for decline.
1. "The Unitarians and the Universalists" by David Robinson,
Greenwood Press, 1985. About 185 p. of text plus 150 p. of
Biographical Dictionary of important people in the movements. 10 p.
of "Bibliographic Essay". The text is too condensed and abstract.
It becomes clear only if one already knows some UU history. Many
chapters alternate between Universalist and Unitarian history but
little comparison between the two. This book represents about the
best that could be done in the limited number of pages allocated to
a huge topic.
