Marilyn J. Fried, age 63, was found dead in her apartment in Pasadena, California on 1 July 2013. She graduated at the top of her class from Loyola Law School and was once a partner in a law firm. But she died broke with almost no friends or family. She once owned a home in Pacific Palisades but after her law firm dissolved and her independent law practice declined, she lost her home, moved into rental property and became heavily in debt. When she got an eviction notice and was being incessantly dunned by creditors, she contemplated suicide as an alternative to becoming homeless. As a result, she was put in a mental hospital for a few days. Her two brothers, David and Michael Berkowitz, died of cancer without leaving any children and she had no sisters and no children. Thus her closest relatives are cousins, all of which she had lost contact with. Thus her parents: Hyman Berkowitz and Lillian Shapiro (nee) left no descendents in spite of the fact that they had 3 children. However one cousin (Lillian's niece), Helen Lawyer of Pasadena, found Marilyn and took her in. After Marilyn obtained disability payments, she moved into her own apartment in Pasadena, but was still being dunned by creditors, one of which obtained a judgement against her. Before she died, a neighbor reports that she was very depressed but the police do not think that she died from suicide although at this time the cause of death is unknown. She is survived by two known cousins and by Marc Fried, her ex-husband.
